Blog Updates
Topic: Summary

Hello fellow artists,

Updates have been hit or miss for quite awhile, but I'm now incorporating another of my blogs with this one and bringing in more of my paintings.  This blog is changing its character somewhat, and will be updated when I have to something to show.

August 2006
Topic: Summary

Hello fellow artists,

Summary for August -- The tutorial this month emphasized healing, intuition, painting from inner necessity, relaxation, awareness, slowing down, and listening to yourself. The progression is toward getting to know yourself deeply because this is where your unique creativity lies. Practicing these exercises will make a difference in your life and in your art.

There were also some tips about using natural pigments, giving yourself a lift by having a painting waiting for you when you get up in the morning, and doing something wild and crazy with your art.

July Summary
Topic: Summary

Hello fellow artists,

This is a summary of the blog entries for July:
1. There were four more entries in the "Artist's Tools" series.
-- Eat well and nutritiously.
-- Take it easy. Successful change comes slowly, so don't try to do it all at once.
-- Listen to your dreams for deeper information about yourself.
-- Spirituality -- reaching out to a larger community.
2. I followed this with lighter info.
-- photos of California and North Carolina
-- where to buy online art supplies
-- some online art studies for playing with your creative spirit
-- building an adventure resume to see where you've been and where you are going
-- using flickr, listservs and contests to gain feedback about your artwork
-- a few words about how it's never too late to become an artist
-- some paintings that show how art can tell us more about our tensions.

Summary for June
Topic: Summary

Hello fellow artists,

This month started with understanding how other artists found healing through art. Even though their lives were difficult, success came, and their art work was an important part of that success, as it can be for you. I also bared my soul on this topic.

This was followed by a discussion of truth. Truth is the bedrock on which we build our lives. By analyzing the art work of others and by being fiercely honest when creating our own art, we can come to an understanding of what our own truth is. Owning this truth, staying in touch with your inner child and your inner madman/woman, requires strength of mind.

At the end of the month I started a list of tools which can help us find that strength, can help us to become more creative, and to help us make the transition from living life on the surface to a life that touches our profound depths. You have the opportunity to open new doors for yourself.

Tutorial Summary for May 2006
Topic: Summary
Hello fellow artists,

This is a summary of the major points on this tutorial so far:

-- First, start with an art form that excites you.

-- Although good brushes, paints, paper, camera, etc., are important, elaborate and expensive equipment can come later.

-- Express your feelings. The more traditional, classical approach was to start with technique, and lots of it. Art schools today still emphasize technique and copying popular art styles. Art students then find they have to unlearn this to find out who they are as artists. Instead, start with finding out who you are as an artist, and then add on technique.

-- Look at the work of other artists with an objective eye. What do you like about the work and what would you have done differently? This will help you know who you are as an artist.

-- Don't be intimidated by great artists. Every artist, including you, works with his or her own life experience, abilities and passions.

-- Keep at it. Although taking breaks can be helpful, don't accept excuses. Distractions can eat up all your free time.

-- Join a club/informal group that focuses on the art work of your choice. This will put you in touch with artists of many levels of experience who can give you feedback on your work and let you know about classes, contests, outings, exhibits, etc.

-- Enter your work in contests. There are hundreds of contests listed on the Internet. Putting your work on the line can help you think more clearly about what you want to achieve.

-- Loosen up. I've found this to be the single most valuable thing I've done to improve my art work -- more valuable than taking classes and buying fancy equipment.

-- Put your feelings into your art work. Keep going deeper. This is where you will discover your creative self. This is a healing place.

-- Don't be afraid to look silly, to cry, or do something that's never been done before. In fact, congratulate yourself if you do any of these things. You have made a breakthrough.

-- Don't give up on yourself.

Your comments can be helpful to others reading this blog.
