Art from North Korea
Topic: Art and Community
Hello fellow artists,It's bad enough when we censor ourselves and end up with art that is meaningless, but what would it be like to live where our government censored us mercilessly? When artists are free of self-censorship, they have freed themselves of cultural blinders and come to see the world in ways that the average citizen does not. They become notorious for speaking their minds. As a result, art in autocratic countries tends to be censored.
North Korea is an example of a country that keeps a close watch on what its people say verbally, musically and visually, as did China under Mao and in Stalinist Soviet Union. For a taste of what it is like to live in today's North Korea, see Art from North Korea and The Art of Propaganda.
If you find that your views are different from the norm, don't worry about it. Express yourself. Be an artist.

Artists as Activists
Topic: Art and Community
Hello fellow artists,Are you wondering why an art tutorial would have so much info on social activism? My point of view is that an artist must go deeply into his or herself in order to find that which is original and creative. This deepening is spiritual as well, which leads to a desire to reach out to others. Reaching out can be achieved through one's art work, if one is moved to be an artist in the traditional sense. However, artistry can be expressed in many ways, thus the emphasis on social artistry -- reaching out in whatever way feels right for you. My hope is that people want to be in touch with a deeper, nurturing part of themselves and to find the most comfortable and powerful way to express this. I'd like to see greater sensitivity in our culture in general. I'd like sensitive people to be in powerful positions. Wouldn't you? Be an artist. Be a social artist.

Postcards from Katrina
Topic: Art and Community
Hello fellow artists,
Postcards from Katrina is an avenue for publishing your stories and postcards about Katrina, while keeping news of Katrina on the front media burner.
It "is a community arts project that uses the power of the arts to bring awareness that people in the Gulf Region still need help and hope. Also the project invites all people to share their stories via homemade postcards with original art, music, photos and poetry to bring attention to issues of education, race, class, health, and economics in their community if a 'mini-Katrina,' were to come." -- from Postcards from Katrina website, by author Tambra Stevenson. The community arts movement is alive and well, nurtures others and is wonderful for your spirit. Be an artist.

Found Art!
Topic: Art and Community
Hello fellow artists,
Found Art! was formed by an optimistic group of Madison, Wisconsin artists who would like to heal the world through their work. Create a small item of artwork, register it at their website, then place it somewhere in your community with a tag of information on it. The person finding it can then go to the Found Art! website to find out who created the work of art and why. The hope is that this will grow exponentially, creating a world of happy givers and receivers of art. It is a way to connect positively, which does not happen often between strangers. There's more information at Madison.com
If this interests you, check out their website. If not, think about creating your own way to help the world along.
A similar event is Bookcrossing, which promotes "catching and releasing" used books.
From the BookCrossing website:
The "3 Rs" of BookCrossing...
"1.Read a good book (you already know how to do that)
2.Register it here (along with your journal comments), get a unique BCID (BookCrossing ID number), and label the book
3. Release it for someone else to read (give it to a friend, leave it on a park bench, donate it to charity, "forget" it in a coffee shop, etc.), and get notified by email each time someone comes here and records a journal entry for that book. And if you make Release Notes on the book, others can Go Hunting for it and try to find it!" These are examples of creativity and community spirit in action. If you know of others, please let me know. Sweet! Express yourself. Be an artist.

Tamara Diaz
Topic: Art and Community
Hello fellow artists,
Speaking of compassion, Tamara Diaz is someone who gives generously to her community, as shown in this statement:
"I am a visual artist, educator and therapist, working with abused and neglected children, who have been removed from their homes. As these children have suffered severe abuse and have had major losses in their lives, art serves as a powerful tool to assist in their process of self-expression and healing. It allows them to relax and use symbols or images that words cannot express. Each day, I feel blessed to be able to be a part in this powerful process. Several years ago, I began making Life Books with children, to help them piece together the details of their complicated lives. Many of these children, even as young as 5 years old, have already been in 12 homes. They do not have information about their birth families, photos, birth certificates, and many other things that most people take for granted. Each book is individually tailored for the child, and art (drawing, painting, collage, writing, poems, photos, maps, etc.) fill the pages. For example, cultural roots are a big focus, as this is something often lost for these children. The front name page might contain a photo of the child, with their name designed in graffiti letters, with a background of the Puerto Rican flag. Through this process, the child develops a sense of pride, and has a more concrete tool to refer to, therefore minimizing the fantasy that comes with not knowing who they are or where they came from."
Magic Mamas by Tamara Diaz
Tamara's compassion and desire to connect shines through her work. Please visit her website for more about this creative and giving person.
