Icy Branch
Topic: Truth

Hello fellow artists,

Sometimes truth comes about because everything falls into place. For example, Icy Branch has a beauty to it and that is about it. It isn't making a statement beyond the beauty of ice on a branch.

What are your thoughts? Perhaps there are other truths about this photograph. A larger version is in my photo album.

Mystery Dog
Topic: Truth

Hello fellow artists,

This watercolor is a continuation of the discussion of truth in art.

What is happening in this picture? Is the animal a dog? It seems too large to go through the opening of the house. Is it welcome in the house? Does it want to go into the house? It appears to be friendly, but maybe it is a wild animal and will go down the path and into the woods. What would the picture mean if the animal was a lion? or a turtle? I've been told that children would enjoy this painting for the mystery of it and for the colors. What are your thoughts? A larger version is in my photo album.

Friendship
Topic: Truth

Hello fellow artists,

Truth can take many forms. For example, the friendship between this girl and her dog is so gentle and sweet that it seems honest for them to be standing on the water of this lake surrounded by family homes.

Some might say that it is not possible for them to be standing on water, therefore the picture is not truthful. My view is that the picture feels right, therefore it is truthful. What do you think? A larger version is in my photo album.

Child in the Countryside
Topic: Truth

Hello fellow artists,

To continue the discussion of truth, I have included a picture of myself when I was about five.

The truth is that I loved playing outside when I was that age, but I was an only child and lived in the country without other playmates. It seems odd for a child that young to be playing outside alone in a field -- and where are my play clothes? Although we lived in that setting, the woods were scary to me. I did not venture into the field until I was a few years older and rarely made it into the woods. So, this picture says quite a bit. Does the tension between the child and her setting come across to you, or does it seem that this child is perfectly happy to be in the picture by herself? I would enjoy your comments.

Finding Truth in Your Art Work
Topic: Truth

Hello fellow artists,

Truth is one of the by-products of doing your own art work. When you answer the questions about what medium you will use, what colors, composition, style, etc., you can either think the answers through very carefully or wing it. You can have a fully analyzed left-brain approach to the truth or a right-brain unconscious approach. In either case, your own truth will come through. It's exciting and eye-opening to see one's self on paper, in a sculpture, a quilt, a piece of jewelry.

This knowledge of your truth is invaluable in your life in general. You will find that when you know your own truth in your art work, you will have honed a sixth-sense for your truth in general. That is, you will trust your truth in your family, your paid job, when watching the news on TV, when playing with your dog, children, friends. Being an artist (trusting in your truth) in all aspects of your life will also bring strength to your art work.
