I've had snakes and apples on my mind lately. This slithery, inquisitive creature was painted with fabric dye on watercolor paper.

Hello Fellow Artists,

"Study #1" was planned in advance, at least the basic shapes were. Then I poured dye onto watercolor paper and let gravity take over. Dye was painted into the areas that were white after the painting dried. I like this painting a lot. Maybe it is a balance of yang and yin, or of planning and the unconscious, or of human control and allowing gravity to be in control. Being a partner with the universe is an empowering experience but it takes real concentration to reach that place.

Hello Fellow Artists,

Some of the most interesting paintings come from my unconscious. I feel that this is the part of me that knows what it is doing, and I like to promote that not only in painting, but in my everyday life. The more I get in touch with that part of me, the stronger it gets. "Organic #1" is part of that process.

Mountain Study

Hello Fellow Artists,

"Rainbow Mountain" (see previous post) is a painting I love, but I like to abstract scenes more than I did in that painting. I thought about it for a few weeks, did another version of it that wasn't as interesting, then forgot about it. One day I was just slathering paint on paper, stepped away from it and realized I had the abstract of this painting that I wanted. This process helped me to place more trust in my unconscious artist. Do you see the mountain, the pink rainbow and the sunlight in front of the mountain?

Hello Fellow Artists,

"Rainbow Mountain" evolved from a trip I took with a friend to New Mexico and Colorado. We were driving late in the afternoon, about to leave New Mexico and head into Colorado, when a lovely group of mountains appeared to the east, with a pink rainbow filtering between the ranges. Had to stop the car, of course, and take some photos.

After about another half mile on the road, the sun broke through in front of the first mountain, while the rainbow was still showing. Had to stop the car again! This is a painting of my memory of that scene. The countryside is stunning.

Hello Fellow Artists,

Painting: poured dye on Arches 140# watercolor paper.
Wall hanging: hand-dyed canvas. 27" x 22.5"

Using a very liquid medium allows me to put my feelings on paper and be surprised by the results. I don't tire of going back to this painting to see what else is there. The wall hanging adds drama and softness.

"Winds" was shown at the Tryon Fine Arts Center in May, 2009.

This painting was planned as a forest, and then the thought of placing a photo of Notre Dame cathedral popped into my mind. The photo is mine (was in Paris Nov. '08, lucky me). I was reading Pillars of the Earth when this was painted.

Hello Fellow Artists,

Another happy result of pouring fabric dye on watercolor paper. It could be a cloud going over the moon, a leaf under water, or whatever you see. That's what I like about it, and that it conveys emotion. I love the feeling of being a partner with the force of gravity and the flow of liquids.

Hello Fellow Artists,

I'm back to painting, still trying to find out how and why I want to paint. I feel that the paintings that come straight out of my unconscious have the most power. Apparently there is a part of me that is very war-weary.
